Spagiria

Spagiria is a series of etchings on triangular zinc plates. Each sheet is built around an officinal plant, drawn from old herbals and illuminated codices, among them the Vienna Dioscorides. The title comes from spagyrics, the alchemical medicine that made remedies from plants by separating their parts and joining them again. Each plate is printed by hand by Luigi Ferranti in a single colour, in an edition of 25.

The printer

K. Lious’s etchings are printed by hand by her printer, Luigi Ferranti, at his Studio L’Acquaforte in Rome. For over fifty years Ferranti has worked with artists including Renzo Vespignani, Giorgio de Chirico, Alberto Sughi, Ugo Attardi, Ennio Calabria, Franz Borghese, Carlo Cattaneo and Sebastian Matta. He prints only on historic presses, two of them from the nineteenth century, recognised by the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities for their historical and ethnographic value. In 2005 the City of Rome named him Master of Craftsmanship.

Each plate is inked and wiped by hand and goes through the press on its own. When the same plate is printed twice in mirror image, as on the carré and on the etching on three plates, it goes through the press twice.

Commissions

K. Lious engraves coats of arms and monograms on commission, printed by hand as etchings.

She also prints on clothes people already own. Rather than make new garments, she works on the ones that already exist, in natural fabrics, and each becomes a single piece. Write to studio@karolinaliusikova.com.

Paintings are available through the studio. Write to studio@karolinaliusikova.com.
